The Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is a file representing the elevation of the ground surface and displaying detailed topographic information.

Depending on resolution it is usually produced from stereo images from Satellite or Airborne sensors alternatively by extraction of height information in topographic maps. The DEM supplies information about the topography, location and shape of obstacles affecting the wave propagation.
